Premium Rail

In rail, demand continues to shift towards premium products that extend track life and reduce failure risks.

EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel is a high quality domestic producer of premium rail, particularly deep head-hardened rail. Since we introduced head hardened rail 20 years ago, we have developed strong technical partnerships (engineering, maintenance, and research and development) with our customers. Currently, we are in the testing stages of our next generation of premium rail, which offers enhanced wear resistance and fracture toughness.

We are the largest North American producer of rail by volume with approximately 39% of the market, and approximately 55% of the Western North America market (2014) where we are the only rail producer.

Non-destructive Testing (NDT) of rail is performed using state-of-the-art technologies highlighted by ultrasonic and eddy current inspection. The complete inspection line is fully automated, providing real time data acquisition and rail characterization. Automation and system details consist of:

  • Ultrasonic inspection of rail head, web and base with redundancy
  • Eddy current inspection of the rail head and base, not previously used in rail inspection
  • Brush machine to remove scale and improve surface quality
  • Stamp reader for automated rail identification
  • Laser profile measurement gauge to quantify full length rail section with extreme accuracy
  • Three-dimensional vision system for real time continuous rail surface inspection
  • Flatness measurement gauge using laser technology to quantify full length horizontal and vertical rail straightness
